How to Import Machine Tools from China: A Complete Guide

Step-by-step guide to import machine tools from China: find a factory, request quotes, MOQ, Incoterms, payment, packing, inspection, duties, shipping and documents.

Why Import Machine Tools from China?

China is one of the world's largest producers of metalworking machine tools. Importers buy from Chinese factories for three practical reasons: competitive factory-direct pricing, a wide product range under one roof, and steadily improving build quality on standard models. Whether you need a bench lathe, a CNC turning machine, a drilling-milling machine, a band saw or a magnetic drill, you can usually source several related machines from a single supplier and consolidate them into one container. WIST Machinery, for example, exports lathes, CNC machines, drilling and milling machines, band saws, magnetic drills, sanders and shapers from Yangzhou, Jiangsu, so dealers and workshops can build a full workshop without juggling ten factories.

Finding a Reliable Factory

Start by listing the machines your customers actually buy, then shortlist factories that specialize in that category rather than general traders. Check their product range, years in business, export experience, and whether they can provide factory photos, video calls and reference customers. WIST sells factory-direct with no trading-company middleman, which means the quote comes from the workshop that builds the machine, communication is direct with the engineers, and spare parts and after-sales support stay in the same hands. Browse our full machine range to see the models we manufacture.

How to Request the Right Quote

A good quote starts with a clear inquiry. Tell the supplier: the exact model or the workpiece you plan to machine; your local voltage and phase (220V/50Hz, 380V/60Hz, single or three phase); the spindle speed, chuck size or accessories you need; and your destination port. Machines can be built to your voltage standard, and accessories such as chucks, steady rests, coolant systems and tooling are cheaper to order with the machine than to retrofit later. For example, if you are comparing a C0636A bench lathe with a CK6432 CNC lathe, state your part size, batch quantity and control-system preference so the supplier prices the right configuration.

MOQ and Sample Orders

Most standard machine tools have a low minimum order quantity. WIST ships single machines — our mini lathes and smaller models accept an MOQ of 1 unit — which suits first-time buyers and small workshops. Larger CNC machines are often ordered one at a time as well, and dealers typically consolidate 3 to 10 machines in a 20ft or 40ft container to save on freight per unit. Ask the supplier for the gross weight and packed dimensions of each model so you can plan the container load.

Incoterms: FOB, CIF and DDP

Choose your trade term before negotiating price. Under FOB (Free On Board), the supplier handles export clearance and loading onto the vessel; you book and pay for the ocean freight and insurance yourself. Under CIF, the supplier arranges and pays for freight and insurance to your destination port. Under DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), the supplier handles export, ocean freight, import clearance and delivery to your door — convenient but more expensive. WIST commonly quotes FOB Shanghai or Ningbo, and can also arrange CIF. For a deeper look at packing, container loading and lead times, read our guide on how to ship machine tools from China.

Payment Terms: T/T and L/C

The standard payment method is telegraphic transfer (T/T): typically a 30% deposit when the order is confirmed, and the 70% balance before shipment against the copy of the bill of lading. For larger orders, an irrevocable letter of credit at sight (L/C) issued by your bank is common and protects both sides. Avoid 100% payment in advance, and never pay the balance before you have seen the pre-shipment photos and packing list.

Export Packing and Third-Party Inspection

Machine tools travel a long way by sea, so export packing matters. Expect fumigated wooden cases, waterproof film wrapping, rust-preventive coating on machined surfaces, and foam or bracing inside the case to hold the machine still. For orders above a few machines, hire a third-party inspection company to check dimensions, nameplates, paint, electrical voltage, basic run and the accessory list before the container is sealed. WIST packs all export machines in wooden cases and shares production and packing photos with the buyer before dispatch.

Import Duties, Customs Clearance and Documents

Import duty rates depend on the HS code of the machine and your importing country, so confirm the exact HS code and duty rate with your local customs broker before ordering — we do not make country-specific duty promises. The documents you should request from the supplier include: the commercial invoice, the packing list, the bill of lading (or air waybill), a certificate of origin, and CE or other conformity documentation where your market requires it. Keep these consistent with the goods description on the invoice to smooth customs clearance.

Sea Freight, Lead Time and After-Sales Support

Standard machines usually have a production lead time of 15 to 30 days after deposit; custom configurations take longer. Ocean transit to the US West Coast is roughly 14 to 25 days, to European ports 25 to 35 days, and to the Middle East or Southeast Asia 10 to 20 days, plus port handling and clearance time. After delivery, choose a supplier that provides an English manual, electrical diagrams, video support and spare parts. WIST offers a 12-month warranty on its machines, responds on WhatsApp and email, and ships wearing parts and control modules quickly. Whether you order a small W13 magnetic drill or a full lathe, after-sales support should be part of the buying decision, not an afterthought.
